By stache at 10:28 am on Monday, January 14, 2008

The Fernley Leader reports some good news in difficult times about the Nevada areas devastated by recent floods:

Burning Man members donate $5,000, volunteer efforts.

Burning Man’s San Francisco main office has given all their employees that want to volunteer their time Friday off and has hired a van to take them up to Fernley.

Burning Man is the annual counter-culture festival that brought more than 47,000 people to Black Rock City in 2007
A subgroup of Burning Man enthusiasts known as Burners Without Borders has raised $5,000 in donations through an e-mail list serve with money coming from as far away as London, England, said BWB organizer Tom Price.

BWB was created in response to Hurricane Katrina, and over six months had 200 volunteers providing more than $1,000,000 in disaster relief aid to the Gulf Coast.

“It’s our experience from Katrina that people need one two things: cash or somebody standing in front of them saying how can I help?’” Price said.

Approximately, 20 members of the group from Sacramento, Reno and Tahoe plan to converge on Fernley and offer their help. BWB is an all volunteer group and 100 percent of donated funds will be available for aid, Price said.
