Krank-Boom-Clank is a new industrial alternative arts collective in Santa Rosa, building “Kinetic Conveyances of Whimsy”. The four builders, David Farish, Dan Kirby, Skye Barnett, and Clifford Hill, just completed their gorgeous new site.
K-B-C have been seen about lately with their large, 4-wheeled “Hennepin Crawler” at Burning Man 2008 and The Great Handcar Regatta 2008, among other local events.
GALLERY
Plenty of photos of their creations and attended events are recounted in the Gallery.
AVAILABLE FOR HIRE
They’re looking to release their kinetic creations to more public and private events.
WORKSHOP
A collaboration with the well-known Fou Fou Ha! burlesque clown dance troupe out of San Francisco is in the works too.
My good pal Mark Nichols (who is an amazing musician and composer heard lately with Choklit’s band Baby Seal Club) is co-producing with Erik Davis a live theater production of their insane “A Burning Opera — How to Survive the Apocalypse“!
Here’s a juicy 15 minute sample featuring a number of musicians including the infamous Mark Growden:
Come experience “How to Survive the Apocalypse” - Premiering Jan. 16 & 17 at Stage Werx (533 Sutter, San Francisco.) Shows Fri 1/16 @ 8:00pm and 10:30 pm; Sat. 1/17 @ 8:00 pm. Tickets are $15 in advance from Brown Paper tickets beginning 12/15; $20 at the door. The event is all-volunteer. All proceeds for the event will be donated to Intersection for the Arts.
“How to Survive the Apocalypse” is a Burning Man-inspired theatrical freak-out that combines rock opera, vaudeville, and a Dionysian revival show that is just as inspired and terrified by current events as you are. Part mutant mystery play, part crash-course in proactive future culture, the evening combines millennialist rants and sexy burlesque with select scenes and songs from the “Burning Opera,” an ambitious and ferociously inventive rock musical scored by Mark Nichols, with libretto by counterculture writer Erik Davis.

Information: www.reichek.org
“The idea for this exhibit came about many years ago when I was hunting for a legitimate excuse for getting into the Burning Man event early,” said Joshua Reichek, president of the exhibit’s sponsor, Creators Equity Foundation. “I had to come up with a project that would be interesting enough for folks to be willing to give up a slot for someone like me to come in. I decided to do a time lapse of the city being built out of the existing desert, through the event and its dismantling. The first frame is of empty desert, the next frames show the city growing and then finally disappearing. The first and last frames are the same.”
The result is the centerpiece of the exhibit, a 180-degree panoramic-view time-lapse of the rise, weeklong event and dissipation of Black Rock City — the Burning Man gathering, presented on three 50 inch, high-resolution plasma displays.
The time-lapse project consists of thousands of high-resolution sequenced images taken over a 21-day period by three cameras arranged in a 180-degree view of the Black Rock Desert of Nevada and captures Black Rock City from start to finish, all in a 40-minute program, synchronized and set to music.
Mercury News relays this story that “Homouroboros” by Peter Hudson has landed in San Jose for the 01SJ: “a global festival of art on the edge”.

Music and Live Entertainment
The stages will be live and in effect starting on Friday from 3pm till midnight, and from around 10am to midnight on Saturday and Sunday. Three whole days! After midnight expect special surprises, acoustic jam sessions and other fun stuff to carry the festival through the night. And there’s no need to dash out on Monday. The gates close Tuesday at noon, so you’re free to stick around ’til then and enjoy the forest!
The gate schedule is as follows:
Thursday May 22 - Gate opens at 4pm and closes at 4am
Friday May 23 - Gate opens at 7am and closes at 2am
Saturday May 24 - Gate opens at 7am and closes at 2am
Sunday May 25 - Gate opens at 7am and closes at 8pm
Monday May 26 - No Entry.
Upon entry, all guests will be required to register and receive a wristband, which must be worn AT ALL TIMES throughout the duration of the event.
In and outs are strongly discouraged, except in the case of emergency. You don’t want to miss anything anyways, right?
Firestarter by Joel McConvey.
“JEJU-DO, SOUTH KOREA—Every year on Jeju-do, a small island off the southwest coast of South Korea, thousands of people get together and set a mountain on fire. That’s the point of the Jeju Jeongwol Daeboreum Fire Festival, which this year fell on March 1. The idea is to celebrate the first full moon of the lunar new year (the Korean word “Daeboreum” translates as “Great Full Moon”), and to recreate the traditional annual burning of harvest grasses to exterminate harmful insects and ensure a frutiful year.
“That’s the official line, anyways. The truth is that it’s a great excuse to stage a spectacle that brings hundreds of tourists to Jeju from the Korean mainland, and to ratchet up the media attention for Korea’s tourist industry (which, while nowhere near as muscular as those of China or Southeast Asia, does a decent business among Asian travellers). And, you know, to set stuff on fire.”
